Give a Hoot
The roofers came this morning but didn’t have the properly sized ladder to get up there. This is turning into the hot new trend of the two thousands, as the same roofer didn’t have the properly sized ladder twice before, and another roofer didn’t have one at an earlier appointment. As far as blunders go, this isn’t up there with “They’ll greet us as liberators,” but it isn’t doing a lot for my overall faith in humanity, either. Most of the houses for miles around are the exact same height as mine, so this isn’t exactly rocket science.
Anyway, we all get to try again tomorrow.
I think the worst part of all this is the bait-and-switch the company pulled, not with their ladders but with their roofers. The ones who came earlier on to estimate the job and do some preliminary patching were gorgeous, but the ones from today were obviously scraped out from the bottom of the barrel; all my dreams of whisking one down the chimney for a high-priced afternoon of man-hours have vanished in a puff of smoke.

In this kind of weather, I can imagine few worse jobs than being a roofer. Perhaps the ladder will suddenly be the right size when it gets a little cooler.

Cara: HOT!
Linda: Well, they are shooting themselves in the foot, then. They are supposed to come back today, and today is supposed to be hotter than yesterday.
Campbell: I reject your variant!!!

Reject away, sweetie. It is sanferryan to me as it is in the OED.
BTW - I know what you mean about the bait and switch thingy. You should have seen what they sent round to quote for taking on our garden on contract and what actually arrived to do the work. One was a Kiwi Legolas the other........

Bait and Switch ....
The man sent over to estimate building a new staircase to our attic: A total Peter Miller (Mambo Italiano)look-alike with an ass that rivalled that of Nicky's from Ajax in the City.
The man that arrived yesterday to do the work: A less cute version of Newman from Seinfeld.
*sigh*

Not to give you more to worry about, I had been told (by a former roofer) that most roofers drink on the job!
So watch out for those flying beer cans!! ;)
P.S. True story. After we bought our current house, I was cleaning out the gutters that autumn, and found two FULL beer cans in one of the them!! (Damn squirrels!)

Campbell again: The OED is not the end all and be all of the universe! ((Hoping lightning doesn't strike me!))
Joel: I'm wondering if these contractors don't know exactly what they're doing.
Barb: Me, if I'm on the first floor. :)
Hanuman: Goblin will happily relieve you of your squirrel problem.
